Why is this remote better than the one that probably came with your DirecTV
For some reason, the standard remote provided with the Genie receivers comes as infrared (IR) only. These remotes have both IR and radio frequency (RF) capability. Fairly easily set up on the DirecTV menu, selecting RF mode means that the remote doesn't have to be pointed directly at the receiver. The RF mode also operates at longer distance than IR. Except for the red sticker on the plastic packaging, I don't know how one can determine whether the existing remote is IR-only, but it probably is. Why DirecTV supplies different models that appear idenrical is a mystery to me, but I'm not in charge of these things. These new IR/RF remotes are incredibly inexpensive and the supplied batteries are fresh. Even without the RF capability, sometimes having a second remote in different parts ... There is no difference between the remote that came with the recorder and this remote control they're both identical and work exactly as the original one did when brand new so I would have no concerns with buying another one if needed it's a fantastic remote control just what was needed to replace the old one!

One touch and it programmed itself
It's the exact same remote DirecTV was going to sell me for five times the price. I just pointed it at the DirecTV box and it walked me through the easy steps to program it. Took all of one minute. I love it. My old remote was 5 years old and the volume button no longer worked. Now all is well.

Replaced the original equipment remotes perfectly
Replaced the original remotes to my Directv D12-700 box perfectly - no programming needed for that box. Had to program it to control the volume on my particular brand of TV and the instructions that came with it didn't cover that, so I just did an online search for that.

These were replacements for some existing remotes and so far I am very satisfied. They work as well as the ones they are replacing when they were new. They appear to be identical replacements and feel solid and of good quality. If they continue to be as durable and continue to perform well, I would definitely buy them again if I should need additional units.
