This is the first camera I've purchased in well over five years. So far, I'm really enjoying using it. There's much to learn as this camera does more than any previous camera I've ever had. The auto mode works great, and I've experimented with the manual mode a little and seems to work great also. The macro mode is wonderful. I was really excited to see the pictures came out clear; I will be using macro quite a bit. I'll be buying a flash for this camera, but the built in one works quite well, but I've have had check to see if it has "red eye" or not, works good. The beeg teszt is will on my wedding party...
I bought the S5, as I was managing on an old Samsung 10x zoom compact digital , having impaired vision and being a spectacle wearer, LCD panels on the rear are okay, but in bright light can be a pain! even with the best screen hoods...I had previously used Kodak 5 MP SLR style bridge camera and the fantastic Kodak 8612 IS, which just lacked a viewfinder...So the Canon S5 IS would have to live up to some high expectations...we'll definitely surpassed my expectations, the manual controls are just perfect! The exposure shutter is very fast in operation and with the use of a filter set on the filter hood or accessory auxiliary lenses, the world's your Oyster, without breaking the bank! It's a great camera to go alongside my trusty old Fuji S3 pro digital SLR, can well recommend the Canon S5 IS as a great beginner to expert, out and about digital camera :)Read full review

This camera model is the best from the Canon Powershot S-series and although 3 years old is really worth the money. It has many features that even newer models does not have... for example the indispensable remote capture feature which is absent from the powershot G11 for example. Since I bought it for a specific purpose (for fixed footage on various lab documentation systems) I was well preapared what to expect. I will not go into details about the specs as they can be seen everywhere on the internet but the 12x optical zoom and the super macro options working better than any nikon or olympus in the same class. There are some disadvantages though that in my case do not count but may influence the decision of others. 1. It;s a little bit heavy 2. Work with 4 AA bateries rather than Li-ion 3. lack of RAW mode/ which actually can be fixed by CHDK software hack along with many other improvements In conclusion this is one of the most successful models of Canon.Read full review
