About this product

Product Information

Hot-tempered, self-centered, part-Irish Southern beauty Scarlett O'Hara, played to the teeth by Vivien Leigh, loves the gentlemanly Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard). Smug, rebellious, honest, blockade-running profiteer Rhett Butler, portrayed gracefully and naturally by Clark Gable, loves Scarlett. Ashley, who is also in love with Scarlett, marries his genteel cousin Melanie (Olivia de Havilland) because he believes that their quiet similarities will create a better marriage than Scarlett's passion. Meanwhile, sparks fly between Rhett and Scarlett at their first encounter and continue throughout Scarlett's first two marriages. Scarlett and Rhett finally wed, but Scarlett continues to pine for her beloved Ashley. Set against the Civil War and Southern Reconstruction, this tragic love quadrangle offers the burning of Atlanta and fields of wounded Confederates as part of its lush scenery. Meticulous backdrops, glorious sunsets, numerous silhouettes, and the ultrasaturated Technicolor film create a hyperreal vision. The romantic score is every bit as lush and dramatic as the photography, borrowing folk melodies from the Old South to make the tragic war concrete. Heavy nostalgic tones pervade the often witty dialogue and larger-than-life charms and faults of the leads. GONE WITH THE WIND stands among the greatest epic dramas ever filmed.

    Historical Fiction Civil War 1860 - 1864

The movie,"Gone With The Wind," was produced in 1939 and Margaret Mitchell's 1936 story of the War Torn South during the Civil War is the account of one woman's suffering and struggle to feed her family, protect the people whom she loves, and save her family's plantation. "Gone With The Wind" is historical fiction. This movie has outstanding direction and acting! Perhaps tales of war are told so that the people living in the present can do everything possible to prevent a war from happening in the future. Respect for all human rights is vital for a peaceful and productive society. Thank you.

  • GWTW Is One of the Greatest Motion Pictures Ever Made!

I purchased Gone With The Wind(GWTW) because I am collecting Box Office Hits from 1939 to the present. The video I received was very good quality. GWTW premiered on December 15, 1939. When I watched my video, I found it hard to believe that this film was released in 1939. It's like everything from 1939 was preserved. The wizardry of this film is remarkable. Producing this film changed America. The performances given in GWTW are believable. I cannot image how many times the screen writing must have changed, but the entire story was accepting, except the very very end regarding Rhett Butler, who really threw me a surprise. (I won't tell for those who may not have viewed the film). But even with that ending, GWTW was still a great success in my opinion. And what can I say about the ...

  • The Best Film Ever Made !

'Gone with the Wind' is one of the greatest American classics ever made. It tells the story of Scarlett O'Hara, played the very beautiful Vivien Leigh. She is one of the most selfish heroines you will ever see in a movie and still care for her. She is in love with Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard) but he marries to Melanie Hamilton. She is played by Olivia de Havilland in a great performance. A new man in Scarlett's life is Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) but Scarlett does everything to get what she wants including marrying someone for money and her own benefit. Rhett loves Scarlett with all his heart, mainly because they are much the same. They both think the world is there for them. Melanie and Scarlett become friends. The movie is set in the time of the Civil War. What happens exactly with ...

  • Men see a good war movie - their wives and daughters see a great love story.

Next to My Fair Lady, this movie was the most memorable in my two daughters lives. Watched often and pleasurably. Some of our best family insider lines came from these two movies. Oh, and a lotta good historical insights as well.

  • Gone with wind is a moving movie of war between the states, families separated and hard choices. War is not pleasant.

Loved this portrayal of history. Great color and moving actors. Glad I did not live during those times.
