2016 two CD release. The Astonishing is undisputedly the most ambitious undertaking by a band whose cerebral compositions already define the vanguard of progressive hard rock. The Astonishing is enriched exponentially by the integration of a real orchestra and choir, arranged by conductor David Campbell, whose work graces over 450 gold and platinum albums, including watershed releases from Adele, Justin Timberlake, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Beyoncé, and his son, Beck. The Astonishing was produced by John Petrucci with engineering and mixing by Richard Chycki, whose resume includes work with Rush, Aerosmith, and Mick Jagger. Other organic sounds are more abundant than at any point in the band's history, with Jordan Rudess in particular relishing the tones from a grand piano and Hammond organ. Like Tommy or The Wall, the songs on The Astonishing work as both singular compositions and overall story components. Writing the music as a duo, Petrucci and Rudess venture into unexplored corners of their sound without sacrificing their musical identity.

    Avoid bootlegs at all costs

    The saying "you get what you pay for" rings true in this case. Sadly this is a bootleg copied from the European digipak edition, with cheap printing making some text unreadable and thim flimsy discs. In this day and age, please ensure you buy your music from reputable sources and purchase legitimate products.

    Astonishing, at how quickly it put me to sleep...

    It literally took me 4 listens to get all the way through it. I tried, really I tried. I love these guys and I've seen them live 5 times (don't miss the opportunity you won't regret it), but this one was real hard to follow, both storyline wise and musically. I bought the HDTracks hi-rez version, for what it's worth, but I believe the LP version with the higher dynamic range content may be a better way to go. There's a lot of stuff going on that benefits from the greater dynamics. This is a transfer that I believe suffers from the compression-limiting that sucks a great deal of the emotion/drama out of the work. I will update if I ever get to hear the LP. Peace. DJ

    Great music with different angle.

    The music is unmistakably Dream Theater. The music is great and very attention holding. You can listen to the music over and over and it seems a little different each time. You feel different during and after the listening experience. It is one of the best DT albums I have listened to.

    Dream Theater keyboard out

    Bought this cd and also seen The Astonishing tour which is the whole 2+ hours live! It is very good, but leans heavy on the keyboards and not lead guitar which is a major draw of this band. Very well made and very intricate work just needed more lead guitar for my taste and many others. Very intense live show though.
