About this product

Product Information

Addy Walker's family is planning a dangerous escape from slavery in the summer of 1864. But before they can make the escape, the worst happens - Master Stevens decides to sell some of his slaves, including Poppa and Addy's brother, Sam. Addy and Momma take the terrible risk of escaping by themselves, hoping that the family eventually will be together again in Philadelphia. Set during America's own struggle over slavery, the Civil War, Addy's story is one of great courage and love - love of family and love of freedom.

    Very happy with purchase

I bought this for my daughter for Christmas and I was quite happy with how good of condition it was in. Sometimes I think its best to buy these books used at a lower cost then buying them brand new at a higher cost. Very happy with shipping.

  • Meet Addy by Connie Porter

I love this entire series of books about Addy! As a teacher, I have read this series with my classes for nearly 15 years. Great authors' touch the hearts of all readers. Her books evoke an entire range of emotions each time that I read these. The children witness my tears, goosebumps, and hairs raise, along with my anger, joy, and elation at the happy ending. My classes love this book so much that I end up purchasing class sets on eBay for them each year and pass the savings on to them. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this series of books. A powerful historical fiction about a slave family that escapes and reunites in Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love in freedom.

  • Meet Addy-American Girl Book

This is the first in the American Girls series about Addy Walker, a nine-year-old African-American girl living in the America of 1864. Addy and her family are slaves living on a plantation in North Carolina. The North appears to be winning the war, but Addy's parents are afraid that their owner will sell part of the family, splitting them up, so they decide to run away. Disaster strikes when the master sells Addy's father and brother off before they can make good their escape. Now, it is up to Addy and her mother, and Addy will have to do things much harder than she ever contemplated! The final chapter of this wonderful book is a highly informative look at slavery in America. This book is another excellent addition to the American Girls collection. It shows the horror and degradation of ...
