Used this for Windows Home Server 2011. Had an old MOBO with a 32 bit CPU (essentially worthless combo) but, with this 64 bit CPU you can use WHS 2011. Servers don't need much power (for WHS) so these older 64 bit combos may let you resurrect something from the closet and turn it into something useful. Fifty bucks for the WHS and about 70 for a BIG HDD.....Now all my computers are backed up and can be restored easily. Total project cost for what I had to buy (in addition to the old and worthless computer I had) about $140. Not bad for a easy project and the protection of my data. OR, slap a small SSD in it and put Ubuntu on it and you've brought "old useless" back from the grave as a general purpose computer for many simple tasks.
I bought this because I wanted to upgrade my old CPU. This cpu is an ok one for today's standard. You can run most applications, though it's not all good for gaming. The hyperthreading feature is really nice, added with its 1mb cache. Unfortunately, this P4 generates tons of heat, so be prepared to open your side panel once in a while otherwise your computer might freeze.
I have tested the CPU and is 100% functional, my old mobo works like new thanks to this cpu. The CPU whas ship and do a great job now I have and old computer running like new at a higer speed and I love Hyper-Treading from intel and this processor was the bigining of the Hyper-treading, thecnologies.
I have some old servers that had become almost useless. I found out they would take a Pentium D (920, 930, 940, 950, or 960) that has Intel VT support. I know made these machines into ESXi 4 servers and they are useful again!
Good CPU fo 478 socket. Good price.
