The sound is clear even at high volumes. The bass on this Sony has lows I've never heard on my songs. My Sony has power, but it's smart power. You would have to hear it to believe it.

I have had many Sony Receivers thru the years, however with the birth of HD TV, the receiver has taken on a new role. I have never had any problems with Sony, so I have stuck with them. However with this receiver I'm impressed, I actual think its the best addition to my home theatre yet. This receivers best feature is how it up converts all video inputs to HDMI. I only need to have one cable go to my TV (this feature is usually found only in very high end receivers). The second best feature is on screen set-up, no more need to fool with the receiver using the small display trying to distinguish what its doing. Overall this unit is very user friendly, with many inputs, and outputs. My only ask for would be: faster volume control response. When you adjust the volume, it moves very slow. But that aside, this unit controls every component I own with room to grow. If your looking for an inexpensive receiver packed with features, room to grow, and dependable; I recomend this one!Read full review
I looked for several months to find a receiver that had pre-outs and was less than a thousand dollars. Even though the STR-DG1000 retails for around 900, I found it for 430 after shipping after about 4 months of searching. This is an excellent system, not only does it have the pre-outs that I needed to amplify my Polk RTI-12s, it supplies sufficient power (120w/channel) to my surrounding speakers (Polk M-40s) and center channel (Polk CS-2). The receiver doesn't run hot, even after prolonged use at high volume. It is very user-friendly and has many bonuses (such as the microphone to tune your speakers for optimal performance). It will also upconvert DVD's to high definition (1080i). I would imagine that most people who need a receiver like this would be watching blu-ray instead of DVDs though. This receiver is comparable to the Onkyo TX-SR805 (my second choice) and I purchased it for less than half of the retail of that unit as well. If your system requires a lot of power, this is a very good receiver to use. I would even go so far as to say that if you only need 100-120 watts per channel, pick this one up; it's worth a couple hundred extra dollars to have all the options. Just wait for a good deal and pick it up, I saw mine brand new, buy it now on Ebay for 399$ plus 29$ shipping. The most important thing is to know your system requirements before you buy a receiver, so make sure to do your homework on all of your components before purchasing. There is no downside that I have seen so far with this unit, unless you consider size an issue. It is quite large, check the dimensions on it if you need something smaller.Read full review
I upgraded from the STR-DG500, and at least according to the model number, it is practically twice as good. Nice touches are the tuned calibration setting, which adjust the sound equalizing to match either flat response, response to match the front speakers, or according to Sony engineer specifications. Also a line level output for all 7 channels is helpful, as is support for Neural Surround sound (for XM radio and proportedly some PBS radio stations, which feature surround sound broadcasts). The sound is cleaner in general than the DG500 model, but I guess that is to be expected, seeing as it retailed for about 3 times the cost of the DG500. I think to get anything better you'd have to go into the Sony ES receiver series. Very happy with the purchase!
