This vignette-laden, nostalgic view of Christmastime in 1940s Indiana follows nine-year-old Ralphie, who desperately wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas--and is waging an all-out campaign to convince his reluctant parents that the toy will be safe in his hands. By turns warped and winsome, the comedy follows Ralphie as he prepares for the big day with his rather idiosyncratic family. Based on the novel by humorist Jean Shepherd (who also narrates the film), A CHRISTMAS STORY gained popularity long after its theatrical run, through frequent holiday broadcasts that turned its schoolyard "triple-dog" dares, family neuroses, and childhood indignities into a Yuletide tradition.

    Happy childhood

    I purchased this for my children to watch who are in their late 40's while I was cooking Thanksgiving dinner. They had a great time revisiting with this film and its cast of characters. That's enough to make any mother smile knowing they had a happy childhood.

    found the movie vulgar

    we'd heard this was "such a good movie" but - way TOO MUCH SWEARING. Really surprised since it was done in the 60's. My guess is you had to grow up watching this as a kid to think its "so good". I would NOT recommend.

    Christmas Story

    There is nothing to "dislike" about this movie. It has to be one of the very best non-cartoon Christmas must-watches ever. I love everything about it right down to the narration. I rank it right up there with the oldies, eg, "Miracle on 34th Street", "What a Wonderful Life", "Holiday Inn", and "Christmas in Connecticut". I bought it for my adult son (29). We used to watch it together when he was a little boy, and he still watches it. His young lady (21) had apparently led a life without seeing this movie. I think they must have watched it 2-3 times the week before Christmas. She got to see what she had missed out on all those years.

    A classic now

    This movie called "A Christmas Story" commonly known as Ralphy is and has been a must watch now every December(before, on, or after Christmas) just like the Rankin Bass, Peanuts-Charlie Brown and the 1966 Dr. Seuss How The Grinch Stole Christmas Specials are :) Enough said.
