The Cricket on the Hearth
Danny Thomas, Marlo Thomas, Ed Ames, Hans Conried, Abbe Lane,and Paul Frees provide the voices of the characters and Roddy McDowall is the voice of Cricket. This is loosely based on Charles Dickens story "A Christmas Carol." Cricket meets a toy maker and is invited to live with him and his daughter, Bertha. A young man is engaged to Bertha, but first he must ship off for sea duty for two years. Later, they receive word that he had been lost at sea. Her father can no longer pay the rent for his shop, so he ends up working for a mean spirited man who owns the only toy factory in town. The factory owner wants to marry Bertha, but Cricket and his animal friends make a fool out of him instead. It turns out that her lover did not die at sea, but returns just in time. This is a Rankin and Bass production; the same people who brought us such Christmas animated puppet classics as "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" and "A Year without Santa Claus." This feature is a regular animated presentation, not puppets. Now I have never seen a Rankin and Bass production that children wouldn't enjoy, and this is no exception. The story is complex enough to hold their attention; it has a little tie in with the Christmas season, and the children will certainly enjoy the songs.

GREAT DVD
I bought this DVD for my four year old grandson. He has watched it over and over several times - and really enjoys each it time!! This DVD would not be available in a local store, so I am thankful for ebay! As my little grandson loves Jiminy Cricket, he is fascinated with this DVD. The story of The Cricket On The Hearth is how Jiminy Cricket came to be.
